Joe Amabile to undergo brain surgery after early-stage tumor diagnosis
Reality star Joe Amabile, known as 'Grocery Store Joe,' has announced he will undergo brain surgery following the discovery of an early-stage glioma tumor.
Bachelor in Paradise and The Bachelorette alum Joe Amabile has announced he will undergo brain surgery after being diagnosed with an early-stage brain tumor. The 40-year-old reality star revealed the news in an Instagram video on Monday, July 13, sharing that a full-body MRI scan uncovered a “blueberry-sized lesion” in his brain that doctors identified as a glioma, a type of tumor. Amabile, known to fans as “Grocery Store Joe,” described the discovery as a “wild couple of weeks” and emphasized that the tumor was caught at an early stage.
“So a little medical update… I didn’t share my Prenuvo results because they ended up finding a lesion in my brain,” Amabile said in the video. “So then I had to go get a brain MRI, and there was a blueberry-sized lesion in my brain that looks to be a glioma, which is a tumor.” He added that he will undergo a craniotomy in two weeks to remove the lesion and have it tested. “It’s been a wild couple of weeks. Definitely wasn’t expecting this,” he said, reflecting on the unexpected diagnosis.
“I think it’s one of those things where you’re like, ‘Oh, something like this will never happen to me,’ and here I am,” Amabile said, his voice carrying a mix of gravity and resolve. “They say it’s really early stages. I hope they are able to get it all, and I’m fine. But I will keep you updated.”

Amabile’s announcement quickly drew an outpouring of support from his “Bachelor” family and fans. His wife, Serena Pitt, wrote in the comments: “You’re so strong and we’re going to get through this together. I love you.” Fellow Bachelor alum Joey Graziadei responded with a message of encouragement: “Sending all the love and support brother. Can’t wait to play a round of golf when you’re all better.” Wells Adams, another “Bachelor” alum, added: “Love you brother. You got this and we’ve got you!”
The 40-year-old, who first gained fame on Season 14 of The Bachelorette before becoming a fan favorite on Bachelor in Paradise, detailed his journey to the diagnosis. He revealed that the process began with a Prenuvo whole-body scan, which led to further imaging. “After multiple scans and MRIs I have what looks to be an early stage brain tumor,” he wrote in the caption of his post. He also mentioned that he had “gone back and forth about what I wanted to share on social media” but ultimately decided to be open about his health. “This is now part of my life now, so might as well. Onto a new journey,” he added.
Amabile’s surgery will take place at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, a facility known for its expertise in neuro-oncology. The procedure, a craniotomy, involves temporarily removing a section of the skull to access the brain. While the exact nature of the tumor remains under investigation, Amabile expressed hope that it is treatable. “I’m doing my best to stay positive during this time and am lucky to have a lot of support from family and friends,” he wrote.
The news has sparked conversations about the importance of early detection in brain tumors. According to the Mayo Clinic, gliomas can vary in severity, with some being non-cancerous. Symptoms may include headaches, nausea, confusion, and changes in cognitive function. However, Amabile has not reported any specific symptoms beyond the medical findings. “I feel fine otherwise,” he said, though he acknowledged the emotional toll of the diagnosis.
Amabile’s career in reality television includes appearances on multiple “Bachelor” franchises, where he became known for his relatable persona and humor. His marriage to Serena Pitt, whom he met on Bachelor in Paradise, has been a central part of his public life. The couple, who tied the knot in 2022, has often shared glimpses of their relationship on social media, with Pitt frequently expressing her support for Amabile’s endeavors.
As Amabile prepares for surgery, his story has resonated with fans and fellow celebrities. “This little blueberry doesn’t stand a chance!” joked Bachelorette contestant Thomas Jacobs in a comment, while Dancing With the Stars alum Alan Bersten sent a message of solidarity: “Bro you know how much I love you. Sending you so much positivity and support. You got this.”
The reality star’s announcement underscores the unpredictability of health challenges, even for those in the public eye. While the road ahead remains uncertain, Amabile’s openness about his journey has already inspired a wave of encouragement from his community. “I’m doing my best to stay positive,” he said, a sentiment echoed by those who have followed his career and personal life. As the “Bachelor” universe rallies behind him, the focus remains on resilience, hope, and the power of support during a challenging time.
