UK police arrest five men near RAF Fairford on terror charges

British counter-terrorism police have launched an urgent investigation following the midnight arrest of five men near a military installation in southwest England. The operation unfolded after emergency services received reports of suspicious activity surrounding three white vans approaching the perimeter of RAF Fairford, a British-owned base that is operated by the U.S. Under an agreement dating back to the Cold War.

Metropolitan Police and Gloucestershire Constabulary Response

The sequence of events began when local police received a call at 12:45 a.m. Related to three suspicious vehicles that appeared to be traveling toward RAF Fairford. Armed officers responded and the five men were arrested in the Whelford area on suspicion of committing offenses under the Explosives Act, and were further arrested on suspicion of preparation of a terrorist act, contrary to section 5 of the Terrorism Act. Vicki Evans, the Metropolitan Police's counterterrorism policing senior national coordinator, stated that the investigation is in its early stages and that the five men remain in custody.

Assistant Chief Constable Richard Ocone of the Gloucestershire Constabulary noted that the situation was contained, and urged the public not to speculate. Fairford hosts the headquarters of the U.S. Air Force’s 501st Combat Support Wing and the 420th Air Base Squadron.

Military Explosive Ordinance Deployment and Community Evacuation

Following the arrests, the British Army deployed a specialist explosive ordnance disposal team to examine the vehicles. Aerial footage from Sky News appeared to show a bomb disposal robot roaming between three white trucks, with the rear doors of two vans open and large black items visible. Vicki Evans stated that a 400-meter cordon has been put in place around the three vehicles, and approximately 85 households have been evacuated as a precaution while examinations take place, with some residents taken to a nearby recreation center.

Julian Tudsbery, a 30-year resident of Whelford, said a resident had reported three suspicious vans in the village early Sunday and that police evacuated him after declaring a major incident. A spokesperson for the U.S. Air Force said U.S. And British personnel remain vigilant and will take appropriate actions to ensure safety.

Geopolitical Context and International Reactions

RAF Fairford has been used by American bombers for strictly limited strikes against Iran under an agreement with former British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who voiced opposition to the war after it was launched by the U.S. And Israel on Feb. 28. Iran has stated that bombers flying from the base have been used for strikes beyond the original remit and indicated that a base used to attack its territory is a legitimate target.

International statements highlighted diverging accounts regarding whether intelligence agencies tracked the suspects beforehand. While British sources reported the incident was not intelligence-led, U.S. President Donald Trump told reporters in Chicago: “It was an amazing job. We had them under investigation. They were looking to do big damage to our fort. And working with the British worked out great. We had them under view for a long time and we got them.” Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s office said he is receiving updates on the situation, while Defence Secretary Wes Streeting confirmed the incident is being dealt with.

As counter-terrorism detectives continue investigating the incident, British security officials note that proxies linked to Iran have previously been behind arson and sabotage attempts, and that national security cases involving hostile states have increased.
