Rapper Jay-Z is moving from helping decide who headlines the Super Bowl halftime show to performing it himself. The National Football League, Apple Music, and Roc Nation announced that the hip-hop mogul will headline the halftime performance for the championship game, marking his first time performing as the featured act at the professional American football league's marquee event.

Jay-Z Steps Into the Spotlight After Years of Producing the Show

Since partnering with the league in 2019, Roc Nation has served as a live music entertainment strategist for the NFL, advising on and producing entertainment presentations including the Super Bowl halftime spectacle. During the initial partnership talks, Jay-Z said he had told NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, "If this is about me performing at the Super Bowl, then we can just end this conversation now." According to the NFL and NPR coverage, Goodell said he had one request when the league first reached an agreement with Roc Nation: that Jay-Z take the stage himself whenever the moment felt right to him.

Prior to the formal announcement, reports described the artist as having selected himself for the slot, while also noting that artists such as Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber had been considered. The official confirmation finalized the booking for the upcoming matchup, blending his roles as an executive associated with the event and its star attraction.

Anniversary Timing and Recent Performances at SoFi Stadium

The booking coincides with celebrations marking three decades since the release of his debut album, *Reasonable Doubt*, in 1996. The milestone was recently marked by sold-out concerts at Yankee Stadium in New York, as well as performances in London, Paris, and a weekend stop at SoFi Stadium. During the Los Angeles concerts, his stage appearances featured guests, including his daughter Blue Ivy playing piano on "The Story of O.J." and "Dead Presidents," alongside appearances from Scarface, John Legend, DJ Khaled, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, and Too $hort.

The selection places Jay-Z in a lineage of recent halftime acts that includes Bad Bunny, Kendrick Lamar, Usher, Rihanna, and The Weeknd. Recent halftime productions have collected accolades, with Kendrick Lamar's performance winning an Emmy Award for Outstanding Music Direction, and Bad Bunny's performance winning multiple Emmys, including best variety special (live).

With the headlining spot confirmed for February 14, 2027, speculation has begun regarding which guest artists Jay-Z might invite to join him on stage at SoFi Stadium, with NFL statements noting that his wife, Beyoncé, will be at the top of the list.
