Julian Ward Returns to Anfield as Richard Hughes Successor

Liverpool have officially appointed Julian Ward as the club's new sporting director with immediate effect. Ward takes over the position from Richard Hughes, who stepped down from the role at the start of the month.

The appointment marks Ward's second tenure in the top recruitment seat at Anfield. He previously served as sporting director during the 2022-23 season after succeeding Michael Edwards, though it was confirmed in November 2022 that he would leave at the end of that season, before returning to the fold in 2024 as Fenway Sports Group's technical director. His association with Liverpool spans more than a decade, having originally joined the club's football operation in 2012 to support scouting, recruitment, and player development.

Mike Gordon and Fenway Sports Group Outline Leadership Decision

FSG president Mike Gordon explained the decision to appoint Ward, emphasizing that his familiarity with the club and broader football industry made him uniquely qualified to lead the department.

"We are delighted that Julian has agreed to take over leadership of our football operations department at this juncture, primarily because it is a role for which we believe he is the ideal candidate given his extensive experience of the football industry in general and Liverpool Football Club in particular."

Gordon added that Ward's expertise will enhance football operations while providing essential support to head coach Andoni Iraola, who has made a positive impression since taking charge. Coverage notes indicate that Ward will work alongside a leadership team that includes assistant sporting director David Woodfine, chief scout Barry Hunter, and FSG director of football development Pedro Marques.

Reflecting on his return, Ward expressed gratitude to club ownership and noted the demanding nature of the role during a period of transition on and off the pitch. His prior experience includes working as European scouting manager for Spain and Portugal, director of loan player management, and assistant sporting director under Michael Edwards, alongside spells working with Manchester City and the Portugal national team.
