British actor Micheal Ward has been found not guilty of all sexual assault charges following a unanimous jury decision at Snaresbrook Crown Court. The actor, known for his role in Top Boy, maintained his innocence throughout the two-week trial.
British actor Micheal Ward, best known for his role as Jamie Tovell in the Netflix series “Top Boy,” was found not guilty of all rape and sexual assault charges following a two-week trial at Snaresbrook Crown Court in London. The 28-year-old, who rose to prominence after starring in the 2019 film *Blue Story* and winning the BAFTA Rising Star Award in 2020, faced allegations stemming from an encounter in January 2023, when a woman accused him of sexually assaulting her in the back of a Mercedes after they met at a New Year’s Day party in east London.
The charges included two counts of rape, two counts of assault by penetration, and one count of sexual assault. Ward, who denied the allegations throughout the trial, maintained that the encounter was consensual. During his testimony, he described the evening as “friendly and flirty,” asserting that the complainant had “a mutual interest” and “never mentioned anything about wanting to leave.” The woman, whose identity is protected by law, claimed she felt “numb” and “scared” during the incident, stating she “completely shut down” and had “no choice” once inside the vehicle. She also testified that she repeatedly asked to leave but was ignored.
The prosecution argued that Ward had disregarded the woman’s unwillingness to continue, while the defense highlighted inconsistencies in her account and forensic evidence. A key point of contention was the absence of blood on the complainant’s clothing, despite her claim of bleeding. Ward’s legal team also questioned the credibility of her testimony, citing deleted messages and her online searches about him prior to the party. The jury, after deliberating for five hours and 25 minutes, returned unanimous not guilty verdicts on all five charges.
Ward broke down in tears as the verdicts were read, embracing his legal team and family in the courtroom. His solicitor, Humzah Ilyas, stated the case had “profoundly impacted” Ward’s life and career, which had been “put on hold” for over three years. Ilyas emphasized the importance of taking sexual assault allegations seriously while acknowledging the actor’s relief at clearing his name. Ward also expressed gratitude to his supporters, stating he hoped to “get back to the work he loves” and rebuild his career.
The trial faced disruptions when social media influencer Murad Merali was removed from the court for posting videos discussing the case online. Judge Rosa Dean ordered him to delete the content and leave the courtroom, citing concerns about potential bias. Parts of the trial were closed to the public during investigations into the incident. Additionally, Ward’s co-star Jasmine Jobson testified on his behalf, describing him as a “beautiful soul” and “kind-hearted man” whose career had been “halted” by the allegations.
The case drew significant attention due to Ward’s rising fame and the broader conversation around consent and sexual violence. While the jury’s decision cleared him of wrongdoing, the actor’s legal battle underscored the complexities of such cases. Ward, who has also appeared in *Empire of Light* and Ari Aster’s *Eddington*, now faces the challenge of reestablishing himself in the entertainment industry after years of legal uncertainty.
