The representative for Sam Neill, Philip Grenz, confirmed on Wednesday, 15 July 2026, that the actor died from pneumonia. The passing of the 78-year-old actor, which occurred on Monday, 13 July 2026, in Sydney, Australia, followed his successful treatment for angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma.

Neill had been diagnosed with the rare form of blood cancer in 2022. He announced that he was cancer-free in April 2026 after undergoing chemotherapy and a clinical trial involving CAR T-cell therapy in Australia. Grenz emphasized that prior to his final illness, Neill had successfully fought and beaten the cancer, noting that reports suggesting otherwise were inaccurate. In a statement released to address recent public discourse, Grenz stated that Neill’s family intends to honor him with a private memorial at his farm in New Zealand at a date yet to be determined.

The actor's death prompted reflections on his final weeks. Laura Tingle, a journalist who previously dated Neill, stated on ABC Radio Sydney that while the actor had been cleared of blood cancer, the years of intensive treatment — including chemotherapy and immunotherapy — left his immune system compromised. Rima Te Wiata, a co-star and friend who spoke with the New Zealand Herald, noted that Neill had contracted pneumonia shortly before his death. She remarked that Neill likely would have found the circumstances of his passing frustrating, given his recent triumph over cancer.

The actor’s family announced his passing via his official Instagram account on 13 July 2026. The initial announcement described the loss as sudden and unexpected but noted that he remained cancer-free at the time. The family expressed gratitude toward the staff at St. Vincent’s Private Hospital for the care provided to the actor. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be directed to the Dunstan Hospital Foundation, the Snowdome Foundation, or organizations dedicated to the preservation of New Zealand wildlife, such as the NZ Nature Fund and Sustainable Tarras.

Neill, whose career spanned over five decades, rose to international prominence with his performance in the 1979 film My Brilliant Career. He attained further global recognition for his role as Dr. Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park franchise, beginning with the 1993 film. His extensive filmography includes roles in Dead Calm, The Hunt for Red October, Event Horizon, The Tudors, and Peaky Blinders. According to his representative, Neill had completed work on four projects within the past year, all of which are expected to be released in the coming months.

Tributes from the entertainment industry followed the announcement. Steven Spielberg, director of Jurassic Park, stated:

"I owe a debt of gratitude to Roger Donaldson, Gilliam Armstrong, Graham Baker and Phillip Noyce for casting Sam Neill in the roles in which he was so brilliant that brought him to my attention and led to his playing Dr. Alan Grant in Jurassic Park. Sam was exceptionally collaborative. It was a stretch for him to play a character who acted as though children were messy and smelly because this was the opposite of the loving father he was to his children. I adored making all the Jurassic movies with him. Along with Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum, we will always have our Jurassic family and Sam will never be forgotten by us or his many millions of fans around the world."

Actor Cillian Murphy, who worked with Neill on Peaky Blinders, stated:

"Like everyone who knew and worked with Sam, I admired him and adored him in equal measure. He was one of the kindest, funniest and gentlest people, and one of the finest actors…"
Nicole Kidman, his Dead Calm co-star, noted that they remained friends for life after meeting when she was 18, stating:
"Sam was one of the greats, a joy to be around. We met when I was just 18 and he took me under his wing and we stayed friends for life. He was charming, kind, funny and intelligent. He will be greatly missed, and my heart goes out to his family."

Neill is survived by his four children, Andrew, Tim, Maiko, and Elena, and eight grandchildren.
