OpenAI is moving to establish a physical footprint in consumer electronics with a screenless, portable smart speaker designed as an artificial intelligence companion. According to reports surfacing as of July 15, 2026, the device is being developed to function as a home-based computer for the era of generative AI, capable of answering questions, managing media, and controlling smart-home appliances.

Design and Functional Capabilities

The device is described as a mobile unit featuring a rechargeable battery, which allows users to carry it between rooms to assist with various tasks, such as cooking or chores, or to play music. It can also remain plugged into a single room. Beyond standard speaker functionality, the hardware integrates cameras and sensors to help it understand a user’s surroundings and context. Sources indicate the system is intended to provide a personalized, proactive experience by drawing on a user's digital data, such as emails, to better anticipate needs.

One of the more distinct features reported is the inclusion of mechanical elements designed to move, an effort to create the impression that the device is alive and to foster a humanlike connection with its owner. Internally, the project is framed as a physical manifestation of the ChatGPT service. The company aims for the device to evolve in its personalization as it interacts with users over time.

Development and Legal Challenges

The hardware push follows OpenAI's $6.4 billion acquisition of former Apple design chief Jony Ive’s firm, io, in May 2025. The device is reportedly one of approximately five distinct hardware products currently in development at OpenAI, with long-term plans that have included explorations of wearable products, such as a pendant, and home robotics, as well as interest in developing a mobile AI device capable of replacing the smartphone.

The development process has faced significant legal scrutiny. In July 2026, Apple initiated a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging a pattern of trade secret theft involving former Apple employees now working for the AI firm. Apple has characterized the alleged misconduct as the tip of the iceberg. In response to these claims, OpenAI spokesperson Drew Pusateri stated:

"We have no interest in other companies’ trade secrets. We remain focused on building innovative technology that empowers people everywhere."

Despite the litigation, reports suggest that those familiar with OpenAI’s plans maintain the device veers significantly from any Apple product currently on the market and that it is unlikely to violate Apple’s trade secrets.

Industry Context

OpenAI’s entry into hardware occurs as the broader technology sector experiments with screen-free interfaces. The company is reportedly unifying multiple engineering, product, and research teams to overhaul its audio models, positioning voice as a primary interface. This strategic pivot follows a trend among technology firms to shift focus away from screen-centric devices, with competitors exploring various form factors, including smart glasses, pendants, and rings. While market analysts continue to speculate on the final form of OpenAI’s various hardware ambitions, the portable, screenless speaker is currently identified as the first anticipated consumer release.
