Russia launches massive drone and missile barrage across Ukraine killing 8
Russian aerial strikes across Ukraine, including Kharkiv and Kyiv, resulted in at least eight deaths and significant infrastructure damage. President Zelenskyy urged international allies to expedite the delivery of promised air defense systems.
Russia conducted a widespread aerial offensive across Ukraine on Saturday, July 11, 2026, utilizing a combination of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones. The strikes targeted locations ranging from the eastern regions of Kharkiv and Sumy to the western Lviv region, resulting in at least eight deaths and dozens of injuries. The assault, which officials described as an escalation in a series of nighttime strikes throughout July, prompted urgent calls from President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for international allies to expedite the delivery of promised air defense systems.
Sumy, Odesa, and Kharkiv sustain infrastructure and civilian damage
The human toll was spread across several urban centers. In the northern city of Sumy, two glide bombs struck a crowded area, killing five people and injuring 30 others. Local authorities reported that one of the bombs hit a bus stop, leaving a yellow bus destroyed. In the southern port city of Odesa, a separate missile strike killed two people and wounded another. Meanwhile, in the eastern city of Kharkiv, a drone hit a civilian enterprise, causing seven injuries. Additional casualties were reported elsewhere; authorities noted one death in the eastern town of Sloviansk and one death in a border district of the Sumy region involving an explosive device.
Kyiv faces ballistic and cruise missile assault
In the capital, Kyiv, at least 11 people were wounded during an overnight attack that involved ballistic and cruise missiles alongside drone swarms. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that the casualties included an 11-year-old boy. The strikes caused significant fires, including at a transformer substation in the Darnytskyi district and an office building in the Solomianskyi district. According to local reports, a railway locomotive was damaged, and fires affected a regional infrastructure facility spanning 4,000 square meters. President Zelenskyy stated that civilian infrastructure was struck before air raid alerts could be issued.
Reporting on the scale of the aerial campaign
There is a divergence in reporting regarding the scale of the Russian aerial campaign. Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense claimed that Russia fired at least 597 attack drones and 26 cruise missiles during the overnight period, with 319 drones and 25 missiles intercepted, while 258 drones were suppressed via electronic warfare. Separately, the Ukrainian Air Force provided figures for the overnight period, stating Russia launched six ballistic missiles, six cruise missiles, and 121 drones. The air force reported that 111 drones and two cruise missiles were downed, noting that all six ballistic missiles breached the perimeter.
Zelenskyy calls for rapid implementation of defense agreements
President Zelenskyy indicated that the inability to intercept ballistic missiles is tied to critical shortages in munitions for Patriot air defense systems. He expressed frustration with the pace of international support following the recent NATO summit in Turkey. "Agreements reached by national leaders must be implemented much more quickly and completely," he said. He specifically highlighted a recent understanding with United States President Donald Trump to grant Ukraine a license to produce its own Patriot interceptor missiles, urging that the project move "as swiftly as possible."
Ukraine targets Russian logistics in the Sea of Azov
Simultaneously, Ukrainian forces maintained a campaign against Russian fuel and logistics infrastructure. Robert Brovdi, chief of Ukraine’s drone forces, stated that his units struck 21 fuel tanker vessels and seven cargo and support ships in the Sea of Azov overnight, bringing the total number of vessels struck during the week to 76. Russian authorities reported that one person was killed in a drone attack on four vessels in Taganrog Bay, including a tanker carrying methanol. The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed its air defense units intercepted 178 Ukrainian drones across various regions.
The weekend violence follows a month of intense pressure on the capital. According to local data, more than 60 people have been killed in strikes on Kyiv and the surrounding region since the start of July.
