Newcastle and Liverpool Honor Late Kevin Keegan with Emotional Tribute
Newcastle United and Liverpool came together to pay an emotional tribute to the late Kevin Keegan at St James' Park on Sunday afternoon ahead of their Premier League opener. The legendary former footballer and manager died last month at the age of 75 following a battle with cancer, and the clubs felt it was only right that they afforded him an emotional send-off.
The players warmed up in shirts adorned with Keegan's iconic number seven, and 500 shirts were laid in a mosaic reading 'legend' and 'There's only one Kevin Keegan,' in the centre circle of the stadium. A minute of applause was also given for Keegan as kick-off fast approached, with both sets of supporters, as well as notable figures such as Sir Kenny Dalglish and Alan Shearer, joining in.
A letter from Keegan's family was included in the pre-match programme, in which fans were thanked for their support over an incredibly tough period. The family expressed their gratitude for the messages, flowers, and tributes left at St James' Park and Anfield, stating that the overwhelming display of affection offered great comfort. The letter read: "Dear Newcastle United fans and the incredible city of Newcastle. The past couple of weeks have been some of the hardest that our family has endured, saying goodbye to our husband, father, and grandfather, Kevin.
The empathy, compassion and warmth of this extraordinary club and community have shone through; the outpouring of love has been truly overwhelming. Having seen the tributes outside St. James’ Park, members of our family came home to Newcastle to see the memorials in person. The sea of black and white shirts and scarves, alongside colours from so many other clubs, reminded us how much Kevin meant to the footballing world.
Supporter groups Wor Flags and Spion Kop 1906 collaborated to coordinate displays across all four stands, marking the first time away fans joined in a full venue display at St James' Park. A centre-circle mosaic was created using shirts left by fans outside the ground following his passing. Players from Newcastle and Liverpool wore special commemorative shirts during warm-ups alongside black armbands during the match, while club captains laid wreaths in front of the Gallowgate End ahead of a silent tribute.
Prominent figures who shared the pitch with Keegan gathered on the pitch to pay their respects to their former colleague. Members of Newcastle's 1990s team, including Faustino Asprilla, stood alongside Liverpool legends Ian Rush and Kenny Dalglish near the tunnel. The atmosphere inside the stadium reflected profound respect for Keegan before kick-off, with fans breaking into spontaneous applause as video highlights of his achievements as both a player and a manager played on the big screens.
Keegan began his senior playing career at Scunthorpe United in 1968 before joining Liverpool under Bill Shankly three years later. He moved to Hamburg, securing the Bundesliga title and winning the European Footballer of the Year award in both 1978 and 1979. He returned home to represent Southampton and Newcastle United, later concluding his playing days with Blacktown City in Australia having scored 204 goals in 592 career appearances.
Keegan subsequently transitioned into management, taking charge of Newcastle, Fulham, Manchester City, and England. He guided Newcastle to a First Division title in his maiden season and enjoyed iconic spells on Tyneside and Merseyside. The tribute was proof of his enduring legacy, with fans and players alike coming together to celebrate his life and career.
Newcastle fans unfurled a banner showing one of Keegan’s many powerful quotes, which read: “I want people to dream about their football club.” Tears were shed by fans during the pre-match tribute as chants of “There’s only one Kevin Keegan” rang around the ground.
Sir Kenny Dalglish and Ian Rush led the Liverpool tributes and were also present at St James’ Park to lay a wreath of red flowers outside of the stadium. Newcastle led the tributes following Keegan’s death, saying: “We are devastated to learn of the passing of Kevin Keegan, one of the most iconic, influential and deeply loved figures in our club’s history. He was the beating heart of Newcastle United for generations of supporters.” Liverpool added: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of the legendary Kevin Keegan and mourn his loss.”
The emotional tribute was a fitting send-off for a man who had given so much to the sport. As the players took to the field, they were met with a sea of black and white shirts and scarves, alongside colors from so many other clubs, reminding everyone of the impact Keegan had on the footballing world. The tribute will be remembered for a long time, and it was proof of the enduring legacy of a true football legend.
